Don’t you love this wonderful time of year? At Christmastime we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We celebrate the miracle that happened when God was born on Earth as a little baby. It all started with an angel and a visit to a young woman named Mary.
“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.” (Luke 1:30, 31).
What an extraordinary visit! God sent the angel Gabriel to visit Mary with very important news. Mary had been chosen to be the mother of God. Let’s try to imagine how Mary felt.
Mary was, in most ways, a very ordinary young woman. She lived in a village called Nazareth, and she was engaged to marry a man named Joseph. Mary lived a quiet, humble life serving God there.
Her quiet life was changed forever when the angel Gabriel visited her. He told her about the extraordinary things that would happen!
Gabriel said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” The Bible tells us that this confused and worried Mary. She tried to imagine what the angel meant.
She must have been afraid, too, because Gabriel’s next words to her were, “Don’t be afraid, Mary!”
The angel Gabriel spoke kindly to Mary and told her about all of the wonderful things that would happen to her. Mary, an ordinary young woman, was going to be the mother of Jesus—the Messiah—the Savior the world had been waiting for!
Mary must have still been a little afraid, but she loved God. She said to the angel, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”
Mary, the ordinary girl from Nazareth, accepted God’s plan for her life. She was afraid and worried, but still she listened. If you feel God calling you to do something extraordinary today, don’t be afraid. Listen and make today a wonderful new day—a new day with Jesus!
