o you like popcorn? Have you ever wondered how a little kernel of corn can turn into a fluffy, delicious snack?
This Bible verse was written as a promise to the Israelites long ago:
“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
It is a promise for us, too. God wants to show us the world that He created for us, such as the corn kernel.
Corn is used for so many things. Corn is used to make syrup to sweeten snack foods, it is used to make plastic, and it is also in your toothpaste. Yes, a corn product is what makes your toothpaste pasty and not watery.
A favorite way to enjoy corn, though, is as popcorn! God hid a wonderful snack inside the corn kernel. Not every kernel, though, can become popcorn. Corn kernels need exactly the right combination of a few things to become popcorn.
First, the kernel has to have the right moisture content. It can’t be too wet or too dry, or it won’t pop. Then it has to be heated at just the right temperature. When you put your popcorn kernels in a hot air popper, or put the microwave popcorn package in the microwave, the kernels need to get hot, but not too hot or they’ll burn.
When the kernels are not too dry or too wet, and they heat up at just the right temperature, something happens. Inside the hard outer shell, things heat up. The kernel is full of a starch that is getting hotter and hotter until—POP!
That’s right! An explosion happens right inside that kernel. As soon as the starchy part hits the air, it turns all fluffy and white. It’s like the kernel pops inside out—popcorn!
Isn’t it wonderful to learn about the world that God created for us? He has so many mighty things to show us about His creation.
After reading this, you are probably ready for a big bowl of popcorn. Ask your parents, and then start popping. Remember, too, to make it a wonderful new day—a new day with Jesus!
