Would you like to have two summers every year? Would you like to skip winter altogether? There is a smart little bird that does exactly that—the Arctic Tern.
The Bible tells us that God looks out for the birds:
“Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” (Matthew 6:26)
God does look after the birds, and he certainly must look out for the Arctic Tern! These medium-sized grey and white birds are quite famous. You see, they migrate further than any other bird or animal.
So, what does it mean to migrate? “To migrate” simply means to move. Many birds, sea creatures and animals migrate to avoid the cold of winter. The Canada Geese will leave Canada just as the days are getting cool and crisp. They fly down to California, where they spend a nice warm winter, and then fly back to Canada just as the weather is warming up there.
The Arctic Tern travels even further. As you can guess from the name, the Arctic Tern lives in the Arctic. These birds with pretty red beaks are born in the Arctic—the top of the world—in places like Greenland and Iceland.
They enjoy the summer in the Arctic and then just as the days are getting cooler, they begin their journey south. They fly along the oceans past Europe, Africa and South America. They fly and fly and fly until they reach the Antarctic. That is the South Pole—the opposite end of the Earth!
These birds arrive just in time to enjoy summer in Antarctica. They enjoy two summers this way! Then as the air gets cooler in the Antarctic, what do you think they do? You guessed it. They flap their wings and fly all the way back North, to the other end of the Earth.
Isn’t the Arctic Tern an amazing bird? Maybe you’re wondering, “How do they do it?” We know it can’t be by accident. It can only be God, who cares for the Arctic Tern. He has given them their built-in GPS system that helps them make this amazing journey.
God cares for these grey and white feathery friends—imagine just how much He cares for you! Ask Him to guide and lead you and make it a wonderful new day—a new day with Jesus!
