You probably already know that God answers your prayers. He is always listening, and He likes to help His children. But did you know that sometimes God needs your help to answer other people’s prayers?
The Bible tells us a lot about prayer, like this verse in 1 Samuel 2:1. “My heart rejoices in the Lord! The Lord has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because you rescued me.”* God answers our prayers in many different kinds of ways.
One day God used Nathan to answer someone’s prayer! That week in church, Nathan’s pastor asked everyone to pray and ask God to show them someone who needed their help. Nathan wasn’t sure he liked the idea. “Hmm,” he thought, “Maybe I can help an old lady across the street or something.”
It was summertime, and that week Nathan started soccer camp. The first day of camp he was so busy listening to the coach and kicking the ball that he forgot all about finding someone who needed his help. That night, though, he thought of his new friends from camp. “OK, God,” he prayed. “If someone needs me, then please show me.”
One of the boys at camp, Jeremy, was a really good player. Nathan watched him, trying to learn some of Jeremy’s tricks. “You’re a great player,” Nathan said as they walked off the field.
“Thanks,” Jeremy answered.
“Where did you learn to play?” Nathan asked.
“Well,” Jeremy said, “My big brother is the best soccer player! He taught me everything.” Jeremy quietly looked down at his cleats. “I miss him. My mom and dad got divorced last year and now my brother and my dad live in another state.”
Just then, Nathan remembered his prayer! “My mom and dad are divorced, too,” he whispered. “It can be lonely at first.”
“You know,” Jeremy smiled, “ I’ve been praying and asking God to send me a friend…someone I can talk to. Maybe you’re the answer to my prayer.”
Nathan smiled. “I sure hope so,” he said. “But while we’re talking, can you show me some of the soccer tricks your brother taught you?” Nathan and Jeremy laughed, and soon became very good friends. Nathan was an answer to Jeremy’s prayer!
If you stay close to God and talk to Him every day, He’ll use you to answer someone else’s prayer, too. So ask God to show you who needs your help, and make it a wonderful new day—a new day with Jesus!
