Spring is in the air! Is it starting to feel like spring at your house? The days are getting longer and the air is getting warmer. The tiny seeds that I planted not so long ago are now budding into little plants. Spring is a wonderful time of year.
Did you know that when Jesus was here on this earth, He loved to tell stories? They are called parables. I always think of one of the stories that He told at this time of year because it’s about seeds. Let’s read Jesus’ story together.
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” (Matthew 13:3-9)
So, what is this story about? Well, seeds are tiny! If you have ever seen an Impatiens plant seed, then you know just how tiny seeds can be. The seeds in this story represent the message of God’s love for all His people. God sprinkles the seeds of His love all over the earth. Some people hear it and accept it, and others don’t.
The seed that was eaten by the birds is like a person hearing about God’s love and not understanding it. The seed never has a chance to grow into a beautiful plant or flower. The seed that was planted in shallow soil is like a plant with no roots. It is like us—if we hear about the message of God’s love for us, but never spend time with Him, we won’t grow roots and grow into beautiful workers for God.
The best seed is the one that lands in good soil. It grows roots, and with water and sunshine, becomes a healthy plant. Impatiens seeds, in the right soil, will become beautiful flowers.
I know that you love the message of God’s love and have accepted Jesus into your heart. Keep watering that seed with lots of prayer and keep reading your Bible. You will grow into a beautiful worker for God, too. So, water the seed of God’s love today and make it a wonderful new day—a new day with Jesus!
