It is a brand new year! The year 2010 will be full of new things to learn and to do. This New Year will probably bring some changes with it too. Change can be exciting and fun, but it can be scary too.
Do you remember our friend, Father Abraham? Well, a very long time ago, God spoke to Abraham and told him something important. God asked Abraham and his wife, Sarah, to move from their home in Ur.
They weren’t going to move to a new house across town, or even to a nearby city. God told Abraham that He wanted him to move to a new land—a strange new land. This is what the Bible says:
“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you’” (Genesis 12:1).
As you can imagine, this was big news in Abraham’s family. He and Sarah probably had mixed feelings about it. I imagine they were afraid, excited, and worried all at the same time. They weren’t planning to move, and their friends and family lived in Ur. Now, everything would change. Nothing would be the same again.
Maybe your parents have shared the big news with you that this year you are moving. This kind of big news is exciting and scary. Maybe your dad or mom lost their job, so you are going to move across the country. Or maybe your parents found a new house closer to the better school across town.
No matter how big or small the move is, it is always big news. It is hard to imagine your comfortable life being different. Maybe you don’t even know what your next home will look like. There are always so many questions and things to think about.
Not knowing what your new life will be like is what makes moving so scary. As scary as moving can be, it helps if we remember Abraham and Sarah. God asked Abraham to move to a new country, a strange land. But Abraham wasn’t scared, and he followed, because he trusted God with his life.
He trusted that God had a great and wonderful plan for his family. He trusted that even though he didn’t know a thing about this new strange land, he knew a lot about his God. He knew that the God that he loved would take care of him.
This New Year will be full of exciting changes. If you are feeling excited, but still a little scared, remember Abraham and Sarah. God had a plan for a wonderful life for them, just like He has a plan for you! Remember and trust God to take care of you, and make it a wonderful New Year—a New Year with Jesus!
